"An excellent watch and an excellent value!" 2009-12-06
By Amarillo Steve (Purcellville, VA USA)
Pros: It always has the correct time (to the second), it's great looking and there is virtually no maintenance required.

Cons: None for the watch, however, the font size in the on-line owner's manual needs to be enlarged a bunch.

I love these watches. This is my second Casio "WAVE CEPTOR" watch; I had my first one for about two years and it performed flawlessly. I purchased this watch primarily because it receives time signals in other countries as well as in North America. We are planning a vacation to the UK in 2010 so it seemed like a good idea to replace my Mens Casio MTG900DA-8V with a multi-band radio signal version. When you consider how well this watch is made, its durability, and the lack of maintenance required, its price is a bargain, even at full retail.

 "Dressy/Stainless version of the Mudman GW9000A-1" 2009-09-14
By Mr. Scott A. Webb (Federal Way, Wa)
This watch is the same as the Mudman GW9000A-1 except for a metal case and band/plastic plated to look like metal instead of the GW9000's heavy black resin bezel and band.

This makes for a very versatile, tough, and fully featured watch that looks more dressy than the Mudman. I've read that the plating (or is it painted) on some of the plastic can wear down to show the plastic underneath, but I've seen no evidence of that at all. On the contrary, my watch has seen the some of the same abuse that killed my non-Gshock watches and has come through w/out a scratch.

It has a great feature set. If you've ever had a Casio, you know how easy they are to learn to use. A feature I didn't think I needed, but have come to love is the auto el feature. It automatically flashes the light on for just over a second if you look at the watch in the dark.

This watch is also cool because you can see the time of day when in in countdown timer mode.

This is a great watch if you want: solar charging, atomic time setting, world time, stopwatch, and countdown timer with a light. You can't go wrong with this watch. Looking for something more blue collar? Try the GW9000A.

 "Great watch!" 2009-09-02
By William Dunn (Hillsborough, NJ)
I have been a Casio G-Shock wearer for as long as I can remember. My wife said I was in need of updating my old black resin g-shock with something nicer. I looked and searched even the Casino web site for the features that I needed. This watch fits them all. I like to wear this watch even more than my Tag. You could not go wrong with this watch. I did need to resize it. Took out 2 links and it fits perfectly.

 "Uggh" 2010-01-18
By Andrew (Ohio)
I bought this watch a few years ago. It was an "everyday" watch for me. A few months ago, the analog display quit keeping correct time. I followed the instructions to re-calibrate the analog time with the digital readout, and this would usually keep it accurate for a week or so. Things deteriorated quickly, to the point where the analog kept accurate time for a day. I contacted Casio, and returned it for a repair. I was told it was out of the warranty period, and would cost over $50 to repair. I would advise against this watch...stay with a digital only readout if you want accuracy.

 "Great Watch" 2010-01-07
By S. LaMagna (New York)
First, I like the style. I like the blacks and the dark silver, and I like the hour and minute hand colors. No other G-Shock looks like this one. I also like that it tells time in both analog, and digital(in the mini screens). I always know the exact right time, (it is always 100% accurate according to the atomic clock) and that I never need to set it, even for DST!

Second, I like the price. I actually bought this at Macy's with a 25% discount, but saw this on Amazon a few days later. Amazon's price was far less than even a 25% discount in a store. I returned the one back to Macy's and bought this one from Amazon.

All the features work as intended- my watch updates it's time from the US Atomic clock once a day,(only if I leave it on my window overnight); it has a stopwatch, hourly chime, alarm, it's waterproof, has a solar battery, and timer.

Two slight inconveniences:

1. The back light. In the dark, when you need to read your watch, you press the button on the top right for the light. It activates an LED at the bottom of the light that cascades over the whole face of the watch. It does a great job if all you need to do is tell the time, but it does not light up the three digital circle screens. This is unlike the digital-only G-shock watches, which have a bright back light for the whole face of the watch and the ability to simply turn your wrist to activate the light.

2. The circle digital screens can be difficult to read/function if the minute hand is on top of them.

If these two things don't bother you, then you will be extremely happy with your purchase.

 "Nice watch but..." 2009-09-24
By Timothy L. Middleton (Phoenix, AZ)
Nice watch and looks great.

Pros:

Nice look and feel

Comfortable to wear

Has many features

Cons:

LED lights are useless

My watch stopped updating the Atomic time and I cant force it to resume

The face is smaller than I prefer for this type of watch

The digital windows are small and cant been seen at night with the LED light, if it had two LEDs instead of one it would be perfect.

Overall its a solid watch for [...], I dont think I would purchase this watch again now that I know more about the G-shock line. I love the solar and atomic features when it works.

"OK But Poor Temperature Range" 2010-01-04
By TPO
Atomic clock, solar feature, altimeter all worked. Barometer with graph very useful. But disappointing temperature range limited to Fahrenheit 14-140. I bought to use on winter camping trip where temps well below zero. And who could ever need readings to 140? Maybe there is some technical limitation; otherwise, poor design.

So far I'm well satisfied with the watch. This is my second Casio, the first one was just a plain digital watch that lasted 26 years, it was only opened three times, the first two times was to replace the battery, the third time the man said it died. I hope this one does as good.

Unfortunately, I had to return this item for defectivve quality. It dropped infor settings after two days. It was extremely hard to press the setting buttons, tjhe manual was inferior for intstructoipnal purposes. For example, it said you can use 12 hour or 24 mode for the digital watch but did not expalin how to set it from one to the other. It arrived blank and could not get it to respond until I removed and reinstalled the battery. Later, 2 days later the battery showeed low again and blanked out all teh settings. Could not get it back. REturned it for credit.

Excellent watch. Does everthing I need it to do and keeps the correct time. I like the features and the initial setup was simple. The functions are simple to use and unlike my Suunto Metron when I want to know the altitude, barometric pressure or direction I don't have to push buttons until I get the right function to come up. It was cheaper than the Suunto with more functions. Plus it is a little more rugged to withstand the current environment I am in.

 "Perfect for active man" 2010-01-04
By C. Gaetano (La Spezia, Italy)
My previous watches were nice but they early got glass scratches (making the time difficult to read) and two times I crashed the watch glass. Moreover the bottons for the commands were often damaged because of watch falliing on the floor. This watch is also nice: it has time hands and even if it is sturd it has not a bad look. On the other hand, it is made to avoid the problems I had with the other watches and has the advantages of being solar powered (no battery substitution and no watch opening), and of being sinchronized with three atomic watches around the world (no need to set the correct time, even after a travel in a nation witha different fuse: it worked in europe). Not expensive for the features it has.

 "The auto fixing watch" 2008-09-25
By Fabio Talavera (USA)
It's a quality good looking watch and you'll be happy with it.

I have some advice for the very start.

1. Before setting anything, charge the battery as some functionality may be disabled.

2. Follow the quick start instructions to set the city time.

3. If the time is wrong you can try the manual setup using the radio signal from the atomic clock. If this doesn't work leave it alone and by next morning it will be OK.

4. Be very patient as it goes on its own pace "slowly". If you try faster it will go crazy. Fortunately it will return to normality after a few minutes of rest.

5. Print the manual from the Casio website or by a microscope to read the booklet and follow the instructions. No one does that.

6. Remember once you leave it alone it will work flawlessly.

I had a hard time when I started playing as soon as it arrived.

I haven't hammered it so the G part we'll see.

Thanks,

"Built like Fort Knox, but VERY Dark Recessed Face" 2008-08-26
By Kirk R. Scott (Austin)
The Casio product pictures of this watch are deceiving -- the marketing photos were obviously taken with bright lights.

The Good:

- VERY solidly built: my son has had a couple of the G-Shock Solar Waveceptors, and this thing is hands above the others I've seen in terms of sturdiness.

- This is both good & bad: the face of the watch (the crystal) is RECESSED significantly; on the positive side, this will protect the mineral crystal from scratches.

- It has the ultra-cool features of Casio's amazing Tough Solar/G-Shock/Atomic Timekeeping... that alone is worth 4 stars.

- While it doesn't quite live up to its pictures, it does have a chronograph look as opposed to the more geeky LCD dials most of the other watches in the line have.

The Ugly:

- Overall, NOT as attractive as the sexy ads portray in my opinion. They obviously used a lot of light for the photos. My first reaction when receiving it was, "this isn't the watch I ordered!"

- The face is VERY dark -- and the small markings (city indicators, function indicators, etc) that seem so visible in the picture are virtually INVISIBLE. I had to get a magnifying glass to set my city correctly. If you are over the age of ~40, fuhgitaboutit. I have the big brother technology to this watch, the Titanium Oceanus brand, and the markings on this watch appear to be almost HALF the size of those on the face of my Oceanus.

- The recessed face **really** detracts from the good looks of the watch; someone sitting near you would have to look straight onto it to see the face -- you'll have to turn your wrist directly toward you to see the time.

- This watch is pretty heavy. Probably works for a teenager doing sports, but waaay too heavy for a little guy like my 8 year old.

Overall, built very well, just not as attractive as portrayed and dark/hard to read. This is for my 15 year old son -- thought about returning it -- but I'll let him decide whether to keep it.

 "Nifty Watch" 2009-12-07
By Alex McNair (Corpus Christi, TX)
Hey, a lot of reviewers have already gone over every detail of this watch and I really can't add too much to them. It's controls are intuitive, which is saying a lot, given all the features. The altimeter, barometer, and temperature functions might be useful, if you take the time to set everything up properly beforehand. I've played with them, but I'm certainly not going to rely on them. The compass is quite accurate and handy. World time, atomic time synchronization, stopwatch functions, and alarms are what you would expect and like I said, easy to operate. The watch has a thin profile, not too clunky on the wrist. I actually wear it sleeping, which is a first for me. It's the ability to lord it over everyone else with truly accurate time that is the big draw. Call me the Time Nazi.

"Buyer beware: Amazon tries to sell used watches as "New"." 2009-09-29
By Joel Tunnah (Brooklyn, NY)
First, the watch: the Casio PAW1300-1V is a great watch, well made, and it is worthy of 5 stars.

Now to the important point of my review.

In the last six months I have bought three watches from Amazon directly ("Ships from and sold by Amazon"): Casio DW6600C-1V and PAW1300-1V, and a Timex ironman. All three showed obvious signs of being returned items: fingerprints, missing/crumpled crystal covering, watch not showing through the box window, torn box, etc.

In the case of the PAW1300-1V, the resin band had actual mud in the grooves, and something like dried cola on it. Obviously somebody wore this watch for a weekend on a camping trip, and then sent it back to Amazon, who promptly sold it to me as a "New" watch.

Once, ok it might be a mistake - but three times in a row?? I now believe it is a policy of theirs to try to sell used watches as if they were new, and I will never, ever, buy another watch from Amazon.

Perfect for rugged adventurers and weekend warriors, the solar-powered Casio Pathfinder men's sport watch is loaded with a digital compass and altimeter/barometer/thermometer--perfect for both mountain trekking and cave spelunking. It also includes tide and moon graphs and moon age data, and is very precise thanks to its atomic timekeeping features. The altimeter offers 5-meter measurements from -700 to 10,000 meters, and it can store altitude, month, date and time data, provide tendency and differential graphs, track cumulative ascent/descent, and sound an alarm when you reach a specified altitude. The watch also has a digital compass with 16 points of measurement displayed on the dial face. Other environmental and timekeeping features include:
  • Barometer with atmospheric pressure tendency/differential graphics
  • Thermometer
  • World Time: 29 times zones (30 cities), city code display, daylight saving on/off
  • 5 daily alarms
  • 1/100 second stopwatch with 24-hour capacity and elapsed/split time modes and 1st-2nd place times
  • Countdown timer with 60-minute range
  • Auto Calendar (pre-programmed until the year 2099)
This watch also features a ±20-second accuracy per month, Afterglow backlighting, and water resistance to water resistance to 200 meters (660 feet)--which will stand up to the rigors of recreational scuba diving. This solar-powered watch has a battery life of up to 5 months on a full charge (without further exposure to light).

This multi-band radio-controlled watch receives a time calibration signal transmitted from several locations across the globe (the U.S., UK, Germany, and Japan), and it has an auto receive function (up to 6 times per day). You can choose to automatically receive this signal four times a day, or manually update the watch to the atomic clock.

Pretty happy with the watch, getting to learn it does require some time unless your familiar with this series already. It's also alot more compact than I thought it was going to be, my last G-Shock sat about half an in off my wrist in height! This Pathfinder paw1500-1V combines features of the Seafinder also. Tough looking, tough acting! I do wish the compass bezel was a bit more tactical and less shiny, but it's nothing that can't be solved with some ingenuity.

 "Outstanding Watch" 2009-11-14
By Oscar Goldman
This watch is one of the gems of the hundreds of watch models designed and produced by Casio. Its digital display is large and clear and its buttons are easily accessible. It is lighter and more compact than other Pathfinder watches and it is packed with features.

The benefit of being solar powered is not so much for the fact that you don't have to buy batteries, but more for the fact that the watch never needs to be opened (thereby reducing its waterproof integrity).

If you live in North America, Europe, Russia or Japan the atomic timekeeping feature makes timekeeping reliable and worry-free. Unfortunately users in Africa, the Middle East, Australia and remote areas of the globe will not have access to this feature. For example, the watch would/could not access a signal in the KBL (Kabul, Afghanistan) time zone.

The watch band is titanium and is of reasonably good quality, although it doesn't feel as solid as a stainless steel band (which is also heavier). Prospective buys should also purchase a cheap watch band pin remover (no more than $5) to remove or add links to the band. While this can also be done at a jeweller, it may need to be done again so given their cheap price it just makes economic sense to own one yourself.

The electroluminescent backlight works great.

The only drawback is that the alarm is not loud enough. This is common with most sealed and solar powered watches. It's not a show stopper though. I would definitely recommend this watch to someone else.

 "Fantastic watch" 2009-11-14
By Todd N. Scott (Orange, CA)
I originally purchased the casio paw 1300 1v with the rubber band, and ended up trading it in for this model with the titanium band. I have to tell you the titanium band is much better and it seems as though the watch fits better. All of the functions of the watch work great and accurate. As said in previous remarks you do have to take the watch off to get the exact temperature reading but other than that barometer and altimeter work fine. I was really happy with Amazons packaging and delievery service, the watch had more protective plastic around it than needed but hey it kept the watch prestine! I have nothing but good things to say for this watch. Im heading up to Big Bear tomorrow and will be using it for my hike to the peak!

 "Great Purchase" 2009-11-11
By J. Ziegler (LA, CA)
Spent a lot of time reviewing other watches, and this seemed to be the best value for the features offered - and had the best reviews. My wife bought it for me and I couldn't be more pleased. Out of the box, the compass is right on, and the altimeter is only 20 ft. off the google earth altitude for my house. Haven't travelled with it yet, but I'll test it abroad next month. Despite the large size, the watch is very light and I forget I'm wearing it. For those looking at Suunto or similar watches, I highly recommend looking at this model watch which has significantly better customer reviews. I really value the amazon customer reviews when I shop, so I thought I'd post one myself!

"Good watch, a few minor flaws" 2009-10-28
By M. Alfakir
I have had this watch now for a year so I can write about my experience with it. I am satisfied with this watch in general. The time is super accurate. The world time function is super nice because of all the travel I do. The compass feature has come in handy a couple of times on my hunting trips so I like it. I wish it stayed on display a bit longer. I don't use the barometer function often so I can't write much about it except that the graph showing the falling and rising pressure is nice.

Now to the cons. First the thermometer is almost useless unless you take it off and let it sit away from your body for a while. I was hunting in a tree last week and the watch was indicating 80 degrees. I took it off my wrist and let it sit on a branch for about 30 minutes and the reading dropped from 80 to 40. You draw your own conclusions. Other drawbacks is that the metal body of the watch is soft and it nicks easy if you come in contact with a rough surface like concrete or brick. The metal band after a bit became full of scrathes and mars because of its softness but I did not care. You maybe able to save a few bucks and get a less featured watch if you don't need the compass function. Overall, I love it and depend on it a lot.

"Very nice and rugged watch" 2009-12-03
By J. Sears
Pros:

20 Bar water resistance

Solar/atomic

Easy to adjust home time zone

Analog and digital time displays

Stylish and comfortable ( big watch but light on the wrist )

Buttons are not easily accidentally pressed

Cons:

Light doesn't stay on for long when pressed ( not a big deal )

If you are an outdoorsman its a great choice. If you want a watch you never have to take off and has a decently loud alarm it is also a good choice. I dont see any reason not to get this watch if you are in the market for one.

 "Almost Perfect" 2009-11-17
By Benjamin Nix (South Jordan UT)
This is a great watch if you are only going to use the stopwatch, and timer functions occasionally, and prefer an analog G-Shock. I ended up buying a GW5600J-1 for the times that I needed a stopwatch or timer. Love both of my G-Shocks.

"A wonderful watch that always works and is always set" 2009-11-10
By Christen C. Lofland
I stopped wearing a wrist watch about ten years ago when I started carrying a cell phone. Why have two time devices? In the last few years though I've started ditching my cell phone when I don't want to be disturbed. That left me with no time piece. My cell phone doesn't like to go swimming either.

So first I wanted a watch that I wouldn't have to keep replacing batteries in, 1. because it is a pain, but 2. I find that good water resistant watches often start leaking after the battery is replaced. Never opening the back of the watch is a good way to maintain the seal.

Second I have some of the radio controlled clocks around the house and I really like that they are always correct without me messing with them. So I wanted the same in a watch.

Finally it needed to be tough, because I am hard on my watches. When I was younger I had good luck with Casio and the "G-Shock" watch was always the "coolest." thing.

My wife dislikes big chunky digital watches though. This one with the analog face was a great compromise. It still has digital, and it is still durable, but the analog hands make it just a tad more classy.

I LOVE this watch. Here are some points:

1. The solar charging works great. I was afraid of letting it die, but it really doesn't have to be in light that much. It goes into power saving mode at night and stays there if you don't bring it into the daylight. So you can leave it in a drawer for weeks. On my wrist, even with long sleeves, it still manages to stay fully charged to "Hi" most of the time. Remember, too, if it does die, it will set itself with the radio when it charges up again.

2. The radio reception does work, but you do have to experiment with where to leave it at night. I just kept putting it in a different spot on my house each night until I found a spot where it was consistently getting the time overnight. Remember that weather affects this too, so try a few nights in each spot, and don't worry if it misses a night once in a while. You really don't need a set EVERY night. It will keep accurate time for a long while between setting itself to the radio.

3. The light is a slight disappointment in that it does NOT illuminate the digital sections. You get the time from the hands, but no date/day/etc. Hopefully you know what day it is. :) For my use it works fine. I usually have my cell phone if I need more than just the time. However, if you compare this to an analog watch with glow in the dark hands it is wonderful. I find the glow in the dark hands to be next to pointless on all but the most expensive diver's watches (and I don't own one of those). The light works great on the hands and it works every time and any time.

In short, great watch. If you want tough, solar, radio set and hands on the face, this is it!
