Powerfully styled with a modern silver resin case, this Casio G-Shock analog/digital men's watch (model G511-1AV) can withstand virtually any punishment you can mete out. It features a black dial and luminous hands as well as three digital subdial windows (for the watch's sport timing features) and an additional digital window displaying day of the week. This large, round case measures 44.5mm wide (or 1.75 inches), and it's completed by a black resin strap that tapers as it winds around your wrist.

It includes a 1/100-second stopwatch with a 60-minute measuring capacity and elapsed time, split time, and 1st/2nd place time modes as well as a 60-minute countdown timer. Other timekeeping functions include 12/24-hour formats, year/month/date/day display (with an autocalendar to the year 2099), daylight savings time on/off, and world time from 29 time zones/27 cities (with city code display). It has four independent daily alarms (with one snooze alarm) and an optional hourly time signal. It also offers a scratch-resistant mineral crystal, AfterGlow LED electro-luminescent backlight, and battery life of up to 2 years.

 "great buy" 2009-12-29

This watch looks a lot better than the picture suggests.

Has a sunken face to prevent scratches and is perfect for smaller wrists.

It takes a lot of abuse and still looks good after over 3 years of use

"Great Watch for the $$" 2008-11-30
By Dale R. Kramer (USA)
My wife bought me the G511 back in 2004; it performed great through 2 tours in Iraq, only to be lost diving. I am sure it is still tracking on the bottom of the Atlantic. I tried to replace it with an Atomic Solar watch. However the orange LED light makes reading your digital display imposable. I am going back to this watch; the only negative is the hands setting when changing time zones

This is a great looking watch. The silver finish gives it a little bit of a dressed up look in comparison to the standard G-Shock. I would buy it again and recommend it to others. I bought it for my husband for his birthday and he loved it.

By G. Smith (Parker, CO)
This is a great watch! It is tough and looks good. I have had a number of compliments on it. It will last for a long time. It has world time zones, five alarms, stop watch, hourly chime, etc. The only negatives are that the hands are hard to set (not a problem unless you travel to many different time zones as I do). Also he band will wear out before the watch (or even the battery) in my experience - but it will last for a long time (years). I received mine as a gift, but two friends had to go out and buy this watch for themselves.

 "Good Idea, poor execution" 2009-12-30
By Juji (Pittsburg, CA United States)
I like this watch because it's a unique color and it's a digital and analog, but the light for this watch is HORRIBLE (it's yellow and not throughout the watch just on the sides). Like mentioned above, I can only hope that the watches with a white background are better lit. You really can't see the digital part of the watch if you are in darkness, but the analog is visible. The band is also a little weird, it's a little tight for my wrists and that's usually not a problem for me. Overall, the watch is okay, I will keep it because it's interesting, but I should have asked Santa for a Baby-G instead, I would have been much happier.

 "Light on the time" 2010-03-29
By J. Ladd
Watch is almost too light. The digital window is only for those who can see well. I got tires of the buttons for setting the time and not a stem. If you use a cell phone to text and not to talk this watch may be fine for you. For the older user it may become a bother to use and reset. Others will speak of the plastic screen that scratches easily, but that won't be a problem for most. I jest got tired of keeping up with the manuels and the buttons to set time.

"Nice enough, but visibility a problem." 2010-01-18
By E. Roman (Orlando, FL)
I have been using inexpensive Casio digitals for some twenty years now. I am a retired airline pilot and have always liked their multiple alarms, 24 hour clock, date readout and decent enough accuracy. This watch has the features I look for, with a bonus of the data storage and analog readout. I have only had this watch for five days and so far I like it.

However, this is my second watch from this order. The first arrived in apparently good condition.....I read all the directions and set it up and it worked fine......for just four hours that is. Then it stopped and everything went blank. No combination of buttons could revive it. On a good note.....Amazon sent me a replacement that arrived just two days later, along with the shipping label to return the old one. So far, the new watch is working as expected. There are minor shortcomings however.

The light that illuminates the dial is almost useless. You can see the glow of the analog hands, but that is the only thing visible.....with or without the light for that matter. If you want to read the watch at night, you will have to turn on a light, unless the glow from the analog hands is enough for you. The other visibility problem is reading the digital display....even with decent lighting. The digital display is viewable through a cutout in the analog face plate, and is small to begin with. The problem is that the cutout is not large enough, and the upper portion of the digital data is partially obscured at certain viewing angles. Sometimes the obscuration is worsened because the face plate casts a shadow over part of the digital readout. This problem is tempered by the fact that you still have the analog display as primary. Still, a minor nuisance.

Another minor problem is the alarm volume. This has been a tendency of Casio for the last few years. I used to have a Telememo Data Bank that I used as my primary alarm. It would wake me up from a dead sleep over 90% of the time. The newer alarms wake me up less than 30% of the time. Again, a minor problem unless this watch is your primary alarm clock.

The last point is about the ten year battery included. I have read that the ten year battery will only last ten years if you don't use the light or the alarm. Every time you use either, it reduces the life of the battery. My previous ten year battery barely lasted three years.

All in all, I still like this watch......so far. I wish the backlight, visibility and alarm volume were better, but then it would be an almost perfect watch. Still a good buy for $22.

 "Decent Watch" 2009-11-21
By Buck Meloy (Alaska)
The Casio AW81D-2AV is a reasonably good looking watch. Unfortunately, it is very hard to read in the dark (the light does a poor job of illuminating the hands, digits, and digital display). The band looks good, has a helpful locking spring-clamp on the clasp, and can be adjusted. The worst aspect is the complex and clunky procedures required to access and use its many settings, and to adjust the hands, which do not automatically change to conform with the digital time. I don't see how one would ever find the "phone book" memo feature useful. Don't throw away the manual as you will surely need it. The watch does seem to keep accurate time, and I have had it under water a few times with no evidence of leaking.

 "My Favourite Watch!" 2009-10-24
By D. King (B.C.)
I have received admiring compliments on the great looks of this watch. It is not too large, and is very comfortable on the wrist. The analog time is very easy to read, and the lume on the hands and markers lasts just fine. Yes it's dimmer towards morning, but by that time my eyes are fully dark-adapted, and anyway the LED light illuminates the hands very well. I suppose it uses less power than an INDIGLO type system. I hardly ever use it. It doesn't really light the LCDs, and the hands are visible without it.

I work in a noisy environment, so I was a bit apprehensive that I would not be able to hear the alarms. Not so. The frequency of the beeping is high enough to penetrate the foam earplugs I normally wear. On the other hand, the 5 second alert from the Count Down Timer is a quite a bit feebler, and that I have missed. It's fine for running though.

The only negative points concern the legibility of the three tiny windows which contain reverse display LCDs. You need to angle them just right to read them even in good light. Trying to set them in the dark? Good luck with that. Just carry a flashlight, LED of course!

This is my favourite watch! Oh, and it keeps really good time, too! (+4 secs/month, approx.)

 "Best looking G-Shock under $100..." 2009-10-03
By M. Perry (Florida)
I just received mine yesterday, and decided to write a review.

I like the blue bezel, as it adds a splash of color without "sticking out". The reverse display is nice, and it gives the face a "stealthy" look, and in my opinion looks cooler than the traditional lcd. The lume is decent, but doesn't last for more than 3 hours, but not a deal breaker to me. It's not an atomic or solar watch, and that's fine too. Those features are nice, but unnecessary to me. Why? Well, for starters, unless you use the backlight everyday, the batteries last forever! Much longer than the 3 years advertised. I have owned many G shocks, and I have a ani-digi model, I purchased 7 years ago, when they first came out, and it's still going strong, on the original battery.

As far as atomic timekeeping goes, well, these japanese movements are VERY accurate, and only lose and gain seconds a month. If you are a tech geek, and have to have the time exact to the hundredth of a second, I can see where the atomic feature would be handy. The multi-band is good for someone that travels around the world, I don't. I guess what i'm saying is if you need that type of functionality on a watch, its available. I just don't see spending extra $$$ on features I will NEVER use. So, if you're at all like me, this watch will be perfect for you.

Another thing I like about this particular G, is it is not as thick as most of the new G shocks out there. It doesn't incorporate the technology I discussed, and thus, it's a smaller watch because of it. I would say the diameter of the watch is medium to large, if you compare it to other G shocks. If you do have a small wrist, it won't look like you are wearing a wall clock on your wrist, but it does look good on a larger wrist like mine.

The watch is light and comfortable, but tough as nails. I have owned G's twice the price, but for some reason, this one's my favorite. It looks 10X nicer in person than in the pictures online. If you like this style of G shock, I whole heartedly recommend a purchase. I feel it's the best bang for the buck out of ALL the G's, and I have seen them all.

 "Sharp Looking Watch" 2008-07-27
By mike_roug (West Cornwall, CT)
I bought this watch as a back-up to my Casio Solar Pathfinder PAW1300. I wanted something I could wear to work that would look nice and also be able to handle getting banged around and the tough stuff. I knew the only answer was to get a G-Shock because they are known for being tough under fire and taking a beating and still going. I am happy with this because I like the blue color as well as many of the features. I have to use GMT time at work so I like to be able to have both of the times up at the same time. I would recommended this watch to anyone. I wish it could be solar powered and atomic like my Pathfinder but I guess you can't have it all and keep it a reasonably low priced watch that you aren't afraid to beat up a little at work. Once again - a great watch!

 "Great watch, great price" 2010-02-15
By Eric A. Ryan
I've long been a fan of casio watches - they're the prefect mix of affordability, quality and durability. I bought this watch to replace my prior casio which after about 7 years had a scratched up crystal and two of the buttons were becoming too difficult to push (one of which was the light).

This watch was very easy to program, and had all the features I wanted. The digital numbers are easy to read, multiple alarms, world times for different cities are a nice feature (we have friends in Europe, and it's always nice to know the time over there prior to calling).

As other reviewers have noted, you cannot see the digital output when you use the light in the dark...you can see the digital numbers on my timex explorer, but you still can't do anything with the digital programming while you're holding down the light button on the timex...so I really don't see this as a problem with the casio. All I ever want to do at night it simply check the time, and the light allows you to read the hands perfectly.

One note on the "notes/memo" function on this watch...I think it's a vestige from the days before cell phones and PDAs. I can't imagine taking the time to program in someone's phone number or a note about something...much easier to do that on my Blackberry. Still, it's there if anyone wants to use it.

As I mentioned earlier in this review, I have a timex expedition which is a digital/analog watch that I never use. If you're curious why I don't use it, it's because the thing is heavy and the ticking sound is too loud and keeps me from wearing the watch at night. I actually use the watch alarm as my daily alarm - it's loud enough to wake me up while not disturbing my wife. However, with the timex, neither of us can get to sleep with that loud, annoying, ticking sound.

The casio is silent, and it's light - almost like not wearing a watch at all. Both of these are huge pluses in my opinion.

Finally, I think this is a nice looking watch. Not gaudy - one I can wear to work or as a casual watch.

"Good watch, a bit different from website image" 2009-12-25

It's a good watch, well built; the black dial helps make it more readable. The image on the website is a bit matte, but the actual watch is a bit more shiny (a minus in my view), and the dial is too crowded with too many little white and red markers.

The digital part is a plus, but not very usable (to me at least).

 "Nice backup watch" 2009-04-04
By James E. Schaefer (Seattle)
This watch looks good and is easy to set up. The use of lcd's as a second hand is very clever. The drawback with this is that they are very hard to read even in bright light. I would recommend that the maker change the color of the lcd's for the second hand or use another medium to make them readable.

Overall, for the price, this watch has functions and looks that make it a good buy.

"I dont see any problems" 2010-03-03
By Jack Black
Just bought the watch, have had it for a few days. Yes the hands block the display a little, but its easy enough to angle the watch to see under them or just look at the analog hands to tell the time, or wait a few minutes to see whatever number you wanted to, this problem is insignificant. I see people criticizing the light feature. I have had no problem seeing the digital number at any time, bright light, lowish light, you can see them just fine. They are a little "dim" but its nothing, you see them.

What do you expect with the thermometer, It is accurate if you take it off your wrist for 10 minutes but when its on i find it adds about 20 degrees f.

You will have to pay to get links taken out as this cannot be done without tools.

My opinion is there is absolutely nothing wrong with this watch. What you see in the picture is what you get. Beautiful, classy, expensive looking, and provides all kinds of information.

 "Excellent digital/analog combo watch!" 2010-01-24
By N. Sinnokrak
This is a great digital watch with an analog face, which is exactly what I was looking for. Very good price, especially considering all of the features. My last combo watch only had a single, small digital window on the face that scrolled through information, and was about the same price.

Some reviews mentioned that the digital display was difficult to see at a glance - I don't really find this a problem. If you're looking for info from any of the digital displays you might just have to tilt the face one way or another, but it's easy to read once you do that. The only occasional issue is reading something (like the temperature readout) when the minute hand is directly over it. But that's about the only "problem" I see. And, I personally like the fact that the analog hands stand out more than the digital displays - when I only glance at the watch face for the time, it's the analog part I'm looking at anyway.

As for figuring out all the features, some of them weren't immediately intuitive out of the box. But after giving the little book a quick read, they're all pretty easy to figure out.

Overall, a great watch for a great price.

 "good look over function" 2009-09-16
By Jet Pilot (Baden, PA United States)
I bought this watch for two reasons: the dressy look, first and foremost, and the digital functionalities as secondary (stopwatch, day/date, world time). It meets my first requirement and I'm pleased with that. But it fails miserably in meeting the second requirement. The digital functions are non-readable unless you have it under the sun. Somehow it requires multiple lighting sources from different angles to be legible. Office lighting produces reflection on the crystal glass, which is very durable and scratch resistant (a big plus). The reflection on the crystal makes it harder to read the digital readout if you only have one source of lighting such as a desk lamp. Tilting the watch cuts the reflection considerably but also reduces the amount of light required to reflect off the digital readout. In an office environment you can still read the digital readout but you almost have to hunt for it due to reflection and the lack of contrast of the gray-digits-on-black face. The backlight is so dim it doesn't help when trying to read the digital readout. The backlight is basically useless unless it's in complete darkness. I gave it three stars because of its handsome dressy look and the black face accentuates the look, as well. To a by-stander, the digital readout sort of disappears into the black face, which is kind of neat now that I've become accustomed to its 'feature'.

My quest was for a watch with a shiny link metal band and a blue dial. I did not care about the brand, but now after only a month, I do. Upon arrival, the actual watch did not look as nice as the picture shown. The actual watch is a good value for the amount I paid, but if you are looking for a watch that will not easily scratch or keep accurate time, this is not the one. Would I buy another watch in this brand? NO.

A nice watch with all the features that most watches of this type have. It's a little thinner than others I have had so it's more comfortable to wear.

One weak point is that the crystal is made of a softer plastic than most so you have to be careful not to scratch it.

I've only had it for a couple of months so time will tell how it fares in the durability department.

"Fulfills my purpose of purchasing it" 2009-10-27
By Vishal Gupta
My purchasing of this watch was to essentially change long term habit by constant rememberance of a particular idea every hour then every 30 mins then every 15 mins in a standard way. The hourly signal beep helped me and the lap counter of 60 is sufficient for 15 hrs with 15 mins interval pratice making this watch suitable. Recall function allowed me to put exact times of day i remembered and create visual graph

A sample graph i have put down at

[...]

The display is dark blue which i love as its the color of my God Krishna.

To develop a habit, we need to change the value system of the brain which needs to be fed a particular idea in a constant interval over a period of time. This is a known way of changing habits in very small measure over a large period of time. for more details mail me at [...]

 "Ok watch, poor band" 2009-10-15
By David B
Watch is ok, it was what I expected. The zoom viewing on Amazon helps to make a good choice online for a small product such as a watch. Where this product really didn't meet expectations was the band. The quality of the band is very cheap. The screws that you remove to adjust the length were so bad that I was not able to remove a link. The manual that came with the watch did not have instructions for adjusting the band and I could not find any.

Also, I have begun receiving spam to my email since I ordered this watch.

"Cheap watch - you get what you pay for" 2009-10-06
By E. Motz (Oakton, VA USA)
When I got this watch, i was surprised by the plastic dial 'diver's' ring that doesn't move. But despite this appearance it looked good on the outside, until you bump into anything. It scratches like cheap plastic and then becomes harder to read. I have had this watch for 3 weeks now and scratched it 4 times. I bumped into the wall again today while carrying something up the steps - it left a mark.

BEWARE - do not buy this 'mineral' watch face. It is plastic. It scratches very easily. I plan to return/buy a better watch next time, and by that I mean next week.

 "Nice watch" 2010-02-23
By Tiago Castanheira (Canada, Toronto)
I really enjoy the g300, I personally have the green version and for the price i cannot complain about anything. It looks really nice for an everyday watch and it has the g shock name to back up its durability. I would highly recommend this watch, for less than $100 you get a really nice timepiece. I have a small wrist and this watch is fine not to big and bulky, despite the pictures.

Pros: Good size, Jam packed with features, The green version has really nice colors making it look like a watch that costs 3 times as much, And of course DURABILITY!!

Cons: The hour and minute Hands can get in the way of the digital display, but i haven't found it to be a big problem myself, You can just move your wrist a bit to see the numbers. For people who aren't to tech savy, it can get a little confusing to use the functions and set up.

I bought this watch as a gift and they instantly liked it, from the time they opened the box. The design is really sleek and classy looking. I haven't heard any complaints from the person I gave it to, so I'm taking that as a good sign that they as well liked the product.

"Style and Hi-Tech all in one" 2010-02-01
By TX_Iron
This is a terrific watch for someone looking for a super combination of tuxedo black class, with modern machine gun technology. It is solid without appearing bulky, it is feature filled without looking weird or overdone, it is masculine without being way overbearing and 4" across....

You might be put off by the plastic wristband, but remember not all plastic is "plastic"... Think Yugo car plastic vs. Toyota car plastic... Casio uses the Toyota-style stuff... The watch is great to run with and time yourself as the large "corner" buttons are easy to find and depress... I don't doubt its durability for a second, and if you find yourself in another country (business, travel, 3rd tour of Iraq), this watch has a function which informs you of the time in your Hometown -- that way you don't call home when everyone is sleeping.

This watch is a fine combination of traditional style elements and cutting edge tech. I am happy with it.

 "Good watch" 2010-01-12
By N. A. PEREZ (Central Val, CA)
I've had several g-shock digital watches and this one takes some getting used to. Like the other reviews the analog hands get in the way of the digital LCD time display, after a week i'm finally getting use to it. The second counter is pretty much worthless unless turn on the LED backlight. The watch bands are pretty cool, very rugged. The actual face is a little thick, but it is not overwhelming. Honestly I bout this watch for style rather than function and it definitely has some style.

 "Dive Watch" 2010-04-01
By Donald Casto
Great watch, good price... This is the second one I've owned... the last one was 5 years old with the same battery but It started to leak. I wore it 24/7 and was pretty tough on it diving, fishing and working. The differece in repair cost and a new one was only a few dollars. I decided to buy a new one. Excellent value!!!!

"Fancy Looking - but crap" 2010-02-05
By ProductDesigner (San Francisco, CA United States)
A watch is supposed to tell the time. I owned this watch for eight months and then it stopped working. I changed the battery and it worked for a couple of weeks and stopped again. So, I contacted Casio repair. It was going to cost me more than I paid for the watch on Amazon to repair it so.. forget it. In a nutshell, do not buy this watch.

I have had my Casio AMW320D-9EV since 1992. I have replaced the battery 3 or 4 times. This watch is indestructible. The digital read out has become difficult to read. When and if this watch dies, I would certainly buy a other.

 "A Classic Beauty" 2009-12-24
By G. Mclellan
I bought one of these in the early nineties. That's how long it's been around, if not longer. I kept it nine years, going through several batteries and bands. As others have stated, eventually (particularly if you change the battery yourself as I did), the water tight seal will fail, as it is a very thin O-ring. Finally, water got in, and that was that. If I had kept it out of the lake, it would likely still be running. Anyway, after going through a lot of other watches, I got curious. To my astonishment, Amazon still had this watch available, so last year I purchased it again. I love this watch. It gets all kinds of compliments, incredibly reliable, and one of the most attractive watches I've ever seen, at any price. What more could you ask for?

"So far, so good. Does what I need." 2009-11-04
By fishgeek (Atlanta GA)
I've had this watch for over 4 months now, and so far I can't find any complaints. I work at a public aquarium, so my hands to get wet in saltwater alot. The watch has handled getting wet without any problems. The wristband is comfortable. I really like the color of the face. It's unique and stands out nicely. Some of my colleagues even complimented it. I also like the digital readout. You can set it to show a second time than the face or to show the date. It is also the readout for stopwatch mode. For the price, it can't be beat.
